For the first time ever, the Isuzu D-MAX has jointly-won the top-accolade in the west, crowned as the ‘West Australian 2020 Ute of the Year’, as part of the newspaper’s annual ‘Car of the Year Awards’.
Sharing the win with the new Mazda BT-50 due to being based on the same platform as the All-New D-MAX, West Australian Motoring Editor, Sam Jeremic was impressed with the D-MAX, praising it as the “new benchmark of the [ute] segment,” referring to the standardised levels of safety equipment across all D-MAX models.
“We [the Judges] were impressed by the segment leading – and segment changing – safety technology and improvements in refinement, while still maintaining the toughness and capability which ute buyers find non-negotiable.”
“We believe new benchmarks have been set in the super popular ute segment, which will force others to raise their game – which is a massive win for ute buyers,” he concluded.
The 1-tonne Ute segment is arguably one of Australia’s most-competitive vehicle classes, with close to a dozen manufacturers competing for a slice.
Since 2014, Australia’s top-selling vehicle has been a ute. Year-on-year since then, utes have grown exponentially in popularity to become the top-choice of motorists seeking uncompromised practicality, lifestyle capability and family-focused versatility.
The award-winning All-New Isuzu D-MAX is certainly no exception to this mania. In high-demand since its launch in September 2020, the third-generation D-MAX has found its place as the third top-selling choice in its class across October, November and December—with an all-time record of 2,409 models sold in December 2020—besting the previous record of the second-generation D-MAX which sold 2,388 models in June 2017.
